D1 sure did great! He remembered all three sounds of /a/, even though I’ve only been through the phonogram cards with him a few times, and the last time was two months ago! Pretty awesome! I thought I’d have to start with Step 1 and just work our way through the phonograms for a few weeks, but that’s not the case at all. He knows nearly all of them!
I started him at Step 6, with Spelling List A. I usually start a kindergartner with 5 words, but he was doing so great I let him keep going until I noticed him getting antsy. That was after 11 words! I lent my WISE Guide for Spelling to a friend, so I wasn’t using the current List A words, but as I recall the words in the TRAH (Teaching Reading at Home) book and the Lists A & B on WISE Guide are the same, in basically the same order.
It was so neat! He really paid attention and worked so hard. Our whole ‘phonics’ time today was about half an hour. I also printed off a frog’s life cycle mini book at Enchanted Learning, and the boys colored those and put them together. We’ll write some more in those tomorrow too. Slow and easy for now.
I wish I had D1 home but that isn’t possible right now. Still he’s miles ahead of where I thought he would be this year. I called my friend and left a message for her to look for my spelling guide so that I can use that with him.
