My 5 year old son has trouble holding a pencil. He brings his ring and middle fingers forward, in front of his pointer finger. I’ve tried our usual “Hold up the flag” trick with him, but he just brings his fingers over the tape and it doesn’t work. As a result, his grip is very weak, and he can barely make legible letters.
This boy can’t even write his name, and that’s not for lack of practice. Something has to be done to retrain his fingers and hand to hold a pencil. I’ve been all over town the past week, trying to locate a triangular pencil grip. You would think with all of the school supply sales, I’d be able to find ONE pencil grip, right? It seems that I see them regularly at any other time of year. Now? Not a chance. So what’s a Hip Momma to do? Why, go online, of course!
I never knew there were so many different types of pencil grips! Oh my, the choices! I settled on purchasing a sampler pack of 3 from Steps4Kids. There are 3 different grips, one of which is called the Crossover Grip. This grip keeps the fingers contained, which is exactly what D2 needs. The price is CHEAP and shipping is cheap too, so I’m sold. A 3-pack for a total of $5 and they take Paypal. What more can a Hip Momma ask for? 😀
