Veggie Tales Trauma

Traumatized by Bob & Larry

“What do you mean, your kids don’t like Veggie Tales?!

“No, they really don’t. Especially D2. He can’t stand them. I have no idea why.”

Or, I HAD no idea why. I recently came across this picture from when I took them to meet Bob and Larry at a local grocery store. I remembered how I had to pull them over to meet them. How I had to pry both of their faces out of my legs and stomach to make them look so they could see them. They were SO BIG. And so scary. And my little boys were having nothing of it.

In this picture they both look relatively calm, but it’s only because they got to turn away from the big scary guys in costumes. D1 looks about to cry, panic, and run. D2 has a “What do you  mean by smile??” look on his face.

Seriously. D2 didn’t willingly watch a single Veggie Tales video after this. He was 2. D1 was 3 1/2 and he didn’t start liking the veggies again until he was about 9 or 10, and then only just  in passing.

My own boys are the first kids I’ve ever known who hated Veggie Tales. I thought I was the worst Christian mother ever. My boys watched Disney movies but no Veggies. Penguins, yes. Bob and Larry however, well they would have been happy to put them in the compost pile. All four of our older kids were totally hooked on Veggie Tales…. and all of them will still watch them if they’re on, or sing along with the songs when they hear them. Not these guys.

Have your kids ever not liked a “typical” childhood thing that you did/do/thought they should? How did you handle it?

Ohh that must have been so scary for them! My son doesn't like any of the people in costumes.. but the typical thing that every child should like that my son hates.. chocolate! Yea.. I know.. it is weird! He often misses out on birthday cake, candy, hot chocolate, and bible verse incentives at church :-P

Wow Lindsay, even chocolate!? I know a couple of people who don't like chocolate and it just seems… strange… but I wish I didn't love it! :) Chocolate just gets us in trouble. lol Those big people in big costumes though… I do understand why they got so scared! The funny thing is they STILL don't like them and they're now 10 & almost 12.

My kids kept their distance from big characters for a time too. They got over it. Interesting thing about Veggie Tales. When my kids were little we had all the tapes (tapes back then, mind you, not DVDs.) They loved them. Now, though, my 21 year old son thinks that Veggie Tales may not be such a good thing. He makes a good point, saying that they trivialize Bible history and present it as nonsense. I see his point! He became a very mature Christian though (despite Veggie Tales?)

Pam, we had most of their videos too (pre-DVDs). I know that they present the Bible in a cartoon-y way but I do think that the Veggies make the main points of the stories understandable for young kids, which is the whole point. We loved them! I just never figured those big Bob & Larry characters would scare my youngest two so much! :)
