Homeschooling Shouldn’t Break the Budget

Spelling with Handwriting

I hope you have enjoyed this week’s Ultimate Blog Party posts! I don’t normally do a whole week’s worth of posting for the UBP, but I decided I wanted to show you something. Our family has homeschooled for over 13 years. Some years have been strictly by the grace of God and the pennies we could scrape together for curriculum.  Other years have been years of plenty and blessing, where we had everything we needed (or thought we needed) with money for  extras.

Your family may be really struggling.  You may be just thinking about homeschooling, and if you have already started looking at curriculum catalogs–oh no! I know already the panic that has flashed through your mind.

“HOW are we going to pay for all the books?!”  Don’t panic. Rarely is homeschooling an emergency, although I do know in some cases it can be, but there is hope. One thing I have learned is that God will provide a way.

Have you enjoyed the free downloads I’ve been sharing this week? Can I let you in on a little secret? I chose each one for a specific purpose.

Did you notice anything in particular about the titles I chose, beside the fact that they are all public domain books?  Did you notice the subjects? We have penmanship, geography, spelling, math, crafts, nature study, American history…

What I have given you is a complete, FREE curriculum program for elementary students! And just to round it out, even though I hadn’t planned on it, I will give you a few more Language Arts resources today.

All of these books are FREE, available online in the public domain. Well, except The Spider and the Fly Copybook, because I actually created that one– but I gave it to you for free. Today is your last chance to download all of this week’s freebies! I will pull them all at midnight Pacific time, which gives you East coasters 3 extra hours! :)

It’s been fun partying with all of you! Please enjoy these final ebooks, put them together with the rest of this week’s books, and you’ve got yourself a good place to begin! And please, come back and see me again!

Living History and Freebies

Cannon Balls

Credit: jmoconnor @ SXC.hu

I enjoy reading historical books. I’ve said it before, and I will probably say it again. :)  History can be so interesting when taught through the lives of real people, doing real things. I’m not talking about textbook regurgitation–oh NO– but “living books”, as Charlotte Mason called them. Living books are books that well, come to life when you read them! They engage you, draw you in and make you want to know more.

Since tomorrow is my last day of freebies, I wanted to make every one count. Don’t forget you’ve only got through midnight tomorrow to download all of the titles from this week, because they will disappear Friday night!

Today’s freebie is all about American history, and has something for all ages.  :)  (downloads expired)

  • Redskin and Cowboy by G.A. Henty

  • Henty’s Books in Chronological Order (just a list!)

  • Letters of John Quincy Adams to His Son, On the Bible and Its Teachings by John Quincy Adams

  • Stories of American Life and Adventure by Edward Eggleston

Plans Change & a Freebie for Boys

To Do List

I had plans for this week.

I was going to come up with a post a day for you, in honor of the Ultimate Blog Party, happening this week over at 5 Minutes for Mom. Then I woke up sick Monday morning. Here it is late Monday night, and I’m just starting to feel marginally better. Sometimes we just have to change the plan.

Don’t you feel like sometimes God just laughs at us? Not in a sick, mean way but more like an amused parent, when the child tries on his Daddy’s shoes. I get all these grand ideas, and I’m going to do this-and-this-and-this, as I go through my mental checklist… and the Lord just stands back and smiles and watches while everything He already knew would happen, does.

I had no idea I’d wake up vomiting at 5:30 in the morning, or that I would spend the entire day in bed, mostly sleeping. You see, I had these plans. I was going to do a 3.5 mile run this morning, then get to spring cleaning my house with the kids. We’re still on spring break, because I have these plans…

Since I finished the Bible in 90 Days again, I have been floundering a bit in what to read next. I have a list of fiction that I want to read (The Hunger Games, anyone??), as well as a list of good-for-me books that I just really should read. That’s what I’ve been focusing on!

So here’s what I’ve got going:

Plan It, Don’t Panic- a how-to meal plan book for people like me who can’t seem to get it together

Today Is Your Best Day- a wonderful little devotional I’m reading

Jesus Calling- a sweet little devotional that I got at the Relevant Conference. I hadn’t even really looked at it until this week, and now I’m going back to it throughout the day and re-reading. I LOVE IT.

So today I just lay in bed, read UBP posts, Facebooked a little, read, and spent a lot of time thinking. Time spent pondering the deep things of God is not time wasted. It wasn’t my plan for the day! But somehow, I am sure that it was His plan. This is just what it took for me to slow down, catch up on some much needed rest, and just be with Him.

So are you ready for a freebie? Because I love my boys so much, and they were SO GOOD today while I was laid up in bed sick,  I have a boy book for you!

(downloads expired)–>   The American Boy’s Handy Book is the original Dangerous Book for Boys!
