Transition and Trust

The decision has been made. It’s time to move on.

Transition.

Since early December I’d been feeling that this year, 2012, would be a year of transition. Of change. Of growth.

I had no idea how that would play out, and I certainly had no idea how right my intuition would be.

Change can be chaotic.

Going into the second half of this year, we are preparing to remodel our kitchen and living room, and possibly put the house on the market. We have no idea which direction we will go yet.

It can be hard. Life-changing even.

We prayerfully decided to start looking for a new church after nearly 17 years in one place.

Transition. Trusting God that he knows better than we.

And sometimes change is a blessing.

Last weekend, our son asked his sweetheart to marry him, and she said yes. Next spring, we will be adding another daughter to the family, and we couldn’t be happier!

Transition can also be scary. Especially for parents.

Another school year is nearly done. Our daughter has finals at the community college this week. Her high school years are over, and her AA degree is nearing completion. She turns 18 in just 2 weeks. Transitioning into adulthood.

So we trust.

Trust that God is who he said that he is and he will do what he said he will do. Trust that our kids are held in his hand and that a hair doesn’t fall from their heads without his knowledge. Trust that he will lead us exactly where he wants us to be, where we can grow and our kids can thrive with other like minded believers.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. Proverb 3:5-6 NLT

VBS and Special Needs

This week is VBS, which is of course a wonderful time of year for moms all over the country. We get five wonderful mornings to ourselves, to think and pray, clean and organize, or run errands without carting the younger set of kids around with us. At least, some moms find freedom in VBS week. I always approach it with a bit of trepidation.

For me, VBS week means getting to the church early to find out who the crew leaders are. It means selecting one (if I know them) or pulling the children’s pastor aside and asking him to select one, very quickly, for my son. Pastor D1 knows who works well with D1 and who doesn’t. I know which teens work well with him and which wouldn’t be a good match. We must have a conversation about it, or it will not be a good experience for my son OR his leader/s.

Last year I got to handpick his crew leader, a 15 year old youth group student who D1 absolutely LOVES. It was probably the best VBS EVER for him. They had a lot of fun together. It was so great, in fact, that D1 invited Q to his birthday in August, AND Q CAME! It totally made my son’s summer.

The partnership between a family with a special needs child, and their church, is huge. We have to be able to work with them, and they with us. We need to have good communication regarding our child. What are your child’s strengths and weaknesses? What personality types does he just NOT do well with? Who do you know of who really cares about her and knows how to work with her? These are such important things to consider when signing your special needs child up for a VBS.

This year, D1 was assigned to a lady I do not know, but Pastor D1 and she both assured me that she knows my son and my son knows her, and she understands him. I didn’t even have to deal with the question “So what’s wrong with him?” As always I get a bit nervous this time of year, but as usual, our church is wonderful about making sure that my son’s needs are considered.
