Would you spend time loving on someone and serving them, even if you knew they may never come to Christ? Is your time wasted? Jesus always took care of people’s immediate needs. He fed the 5000 and then he fed an even larger group. He had mercy on them because they followed him around for days at a time. There were no fast food places, and no 7-11 stores. He met their needs and they heard him because he had mercy on them.
How many times have you seen them? The nameless ones, with cardboard signs. Maybe he really is a veteran. Maybe she really does have 3 kids. Maybe he really does just want a beer.
And maybe these are just people, trying to meet a need that no one else has been willing to see… to really take a hard look and really see them. Because these are people. They are people with pride. With hearts. As one sweet man named Angel told my son, “someone with a soul”. Yes, a soul.
Each person, created in the image of a Holy God, with a soul. So what if he never gives his life to Christ… is your time truly wasted if you touch a human being and show him compassion? Mercy isn’t just for the wealthy. It’s not just for the clean. Mercy is for the desperate souls.
