HS Mother’s Journal: May the 4th Be With You

Sheltie puppy

Our daughter and her prospective baby!

In my life this week…

I am tired. Very tired. And we just started our third term of school! I have been staying up too late, and getting up early. I need more sleep. And a massage. Yeah, a massage. ;)  Oh and I’m running a 12k race on Sunday!

In our homeschool this week…

We just started school again after taking April off for spring break. I came back refreshed (in the school sense) and ready to get us back where we need to be. That being said, school this week was a bit rough, but it went fairly well.

Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share…

Don’t put all of your stock in a curriculum program. All you really need for access to an unending wealth of education are a library card and access to a computer, for public domain books.

I am inspired by…

Charlotte Mason. I re-read A Charlotte Mason Education by Catherine Levison over our break, and I am almost finished with More Charlotte Mason Education.  When I read them the first time it hit me like a semi truck that these methods DO WORK with my boys. Her teaching theories were much more than just ideas: She put them into action with the PNEU schools in England, some of which are still open and running today. This woman has my admiration and I have much to learn from her.

My favorite thing this week was…

Watching my boys give their science project demonstrations at co-op! Both of them did so well, and D1′s balloon project was fantastic!

What’s working/not working for us…

Working: Shorter lessons. Spelling tied to our history & geography. Starting earlier.

Not working: Computer time for Momma before school. Goal: No computer for Mom until lunch time, unless I need to print out something for our lessons. Also I haven’t had much time to run, and with this race on Sunday that’s NOT a good thing. I need to work in regular running times 3-4x a week.

Questions/thoughts I have…

Does someone want to come help me deep clean and organize my house for our possible move? ;)

Things I’m working on…

Learning more about implementing Charlotte Mason’s techniques. I’m also helping my husband get started on small repairs and things on the house. We may (or may not) be moving. Either way, all this little stuff needs to be done. First up: Painting the basement bedrooms and family room!

I’m reading…

I’m cooking…

Seasoning mixes! I am running out of Taco Seasoning, and I need Chili Seasoning and Spaghetti Seasonings. I have great recipes for those, and they turn out SO great there’s no reason to ever buy them! I am slowly converting our oldest daughter and our friends over to home made seasoning mixes rather than packaged. :)

I’m grateful for…

A job that allows me to be so flexible. I have a love/hate relationship with my job because it is so physically demanding. I will be happy to not have to do this any more, but I am so thankful that I have a job and that I can choose my days and hours. There isn’t any other traditional employment that would allow me to do that.

I’m praying for…

My Relevant 2010 friend Shelley Ballestero and her family. Her 11 year old son has cancer and their family has been through the wringer the past couple of months!

A quote to share…

“Schooling confuses teaching with learning, grade advancement with education, a diploma with competence,

and fluency with the ability to say something new.”

    Hi, Dawn.

I'm finally getting around to responding to and following the blogs of those who were kind enough to visit me during the Ultimate Blog Party. I'm looking forward to reading lots of good content here. :^)

Amber: Start with one of Catherine Levison's books if you can. They give you such a GREAT view and you'll have something concrete to hang her stuff on. Because CM lived at the turn of the century, the language is pretty deep. I need something in plain ol' American first, so that the early 1900 British makes sense. :) And the baby? We picked him up this afternoon. He's currently got our two poms cowed. LOL He's a Sheltie, so (at 9 wks) he's already almost the same size as they are and will be much bigger than them.

I agree with this. That allows for more flexibility in the part of the mother and the learner.
