The Trouble with Puppies

DSCF1079

The Wonder Twins are at it again. This time, it was a bolster pillow from my bed. They killed it, gutted it, and dragged it home. Okay, not exactly, but they would like to think that’s what they did. They actually chewed the button off of the end of the bolster, ripped the pillow open, and had a wonderful time ripping the stuffing out of it, all over my bedroom. I caught them in the act, and both tried to look innocent, with stuffing stuck between their teeth.

In the past month, Missy and Levi have:

  • Dumped 5 bathroom waste baskets and shredded the contents (you don’t EVEN want to know)
  • Ripped up my bolster pillow
  • Killed 3 mice and two birds (again with the hunting! Like here, and here.)
  • Rolled in something nasty. Not sure what but it smelled horrible!
  • Escaped from the back yard 4 different times
  • Pooped or peed in more places than I can count, INDOORS
  • Stolen 13 separate socks and 1 pair of underwear, and dragged them outside
  • Spent untold hours barking mindlessly at the back fence.

I did get to have a little revenge though. They have both been neutered (Ha! Take that!), had rabies shots (again, HA!) and I bought an ultrasonic bark-stopper that seems to work quite well. The only trouble is that I need one on each corner of the fence to stop the yapping in the yard. In the house, it is quite effective!

Despite how it sounds, they are actually getting much better about going to the bathroom outside. They have graduated to being allowed to sleep with us again, since they don’t wet my bed any more. J and I are training them, working on sit, lay, leave it, and beg. Missy begs very pretty now. :) Both also walk very happily on a leash with a harness.

These puppies though, they are nothing but trouble! Sweet, annoying, trouble.

  • What a great post!!! We don’t have dogs… but we have a 3 year old son… and this (minus the barking insert whining) could have been said about his path of destruction sometimes!!

Sorry I’m late getting here from iFellowship – but so glad I still came by!!!

  • lol when my parents got us kids a dog (I was about 10) I foolishly gave it a stuffed animal to ‘keep it company’ when we were at school.

Imagine my shock when I came home and it was nothing but fluff all over the house.

My mom made me clean it up and I think I glared at the dog for days.

Puppies and dogs are just so cute, but oh so much work :)

  • Your puppies are so adorable. How can they do any of the horrible things that you accuse them of? Maybe it was “Not Me” and he blamed it on the puppies?

I have a Boston Terrier who loves nothing more than to pull the eyes off of unsuspecting stuffed animals and then remove all the stuffing, not resting until it is strewn across the room – so I feel your pain!

WOW! Talk about tearing up some things. Puppies definitely love to get into some trouble. Then they look up at you with those eyes and wag their tail out of it. :)

  • If they continue to give you a tough time it might be worth looking up crate training. We have a 4 1/2 mos old lab/pitt cross and she came from the rescue comortable with a crate and it’s been great. Gives her a place to be away from the confusion and learn bladder control, us time to relax, lots of benefits.

Anyhow, enjoy the pups! We’re loving ours!

    • They ARE crate trained. The are in the crate at night and when ever we aren’t home. They voluntarily go in for naps and things too. They just haven’t caught on to housebreaking and we are very frustrated. They are six months old and it’s still a constant watch to see where they are heading, all the time.

      • Oh! Then if you’re interested here’s what we did and are doing. For the first couple of weeks Blue (our puppy) stayed in the crate all the time. We’d take her out to pee and for play and excercise (1/2 hour but since your puppies are older maybe an hour) then put her right back in the crate. We took her out to pee as soon as she came out, about every 20 minutes and just before we put her back in. It helped her to learn that peeing happens outside only and that she can hold her bladder.

        Hope this helps!
