It has been SO LONG since I’ve posted a Homeschool Weekly Wrap-Up, that I decided to get a one week jump on it and post where I’m at as far as preparing for our school year.
So this week, I have:
1. Printed about half of the worksheets will be using with our Middle Ages Study. I also printed two ebooks, and I think I have two more to go. And can I say AGAIN how much I love ebooks, and how much I LOVE MY LASER PRINTER!? I do, I really really do.
2. Filed our Declaration of Intent To Homeschool form with the school district. I even remembered to have them stamp it received and make me a copy.
3. Visited The Homeschool Bookshop yesterday, and picked up some books there:
- Math U See Gamma student test book
- Knights & Castles: 50 Hands-On Activities to Experience the Middle Ages
- Life of Fred: Geometry & the answer book, for J to prepare for Running Start in January
- A student planner for D1. He has decided that he wants to take on that responsibility, and I do think that may help him stay on track as far as assignments go. He is very checklist-oriented.
I even had some store credit to use, which made it really nice! I love that we have this store here. We don’t have to wait for the next used curriculum sale, or pay shipping to order online. Just drop by the Bookshop.
For now, that’s where I’m at. I know I have a bunch of things yet to do.

I just heard of Life of Fred last week. What do you think of it? We currently use Teaching Textbooks but I’ve heard it becomes hard to use at the 8th grade level so I was told to look into this one. I like to have many, many personal opinions before I buy something. If you have time, of course. You’re probably as crazed as I am right now. Thanks!
Crystal: We don’t start school until Tuesday, so the jury is still out, but I do like the look of it. You can view samples of each book on their website http://www.stanleyschmidt.com/FredGauss/index2.html. Our daughter it using it for the first time, for geometry specifically because I’ve been told it doesn’t take long to get through lessons and she is prepping to go to Running Start at the community college in January.
My husband tried using Life of Fred with our daughter. The hubby loves the curriculum (he’s a math tutor), but my daughter didn’t do as well as we expected with it. However, we’re starting to see that she needs a little hand-holding in Math (in spite of the fact that she’s really quite good at it) so it’s probably not the curriculum that was the issue.
I usually really enjoy planning out our school years, but this year it was much harder for some reason. Enjoy the rest of your planning and your school year!!
I always wondered, when you homeschool, does the school day take as long as it does in district school, or since you only have a few people to deal with do you get all the lessons done in 2 or 3 hours?

Veronica: Whew! THAT’S a question! LOL All I can say is it totally depends on the child and the family. Typically homeschoolers get done hours before the public schools do, but again that is as long as you don’t have special needs, or a child whose mind purposefully goes blank at the thought of long division, or any number of other things. I guess the best I can say is yes, sometimes.
In our family, we are usually done either by lunch time or 1:30-2:00 depending on what we’re doing that day. We tend to do big projects after lunch.
Planning is half the fun!

This is true! I love planning! Beginning of the year planning is always CRAZY though!
ooh the middle ages and knights. I am so looking forward to that!
It’s my FAVORITE time period!! My list of want-to-read books is a mile long. I feel sorry for my kids this year, LOL!
Great prep! We’ll be in Middle Ages next year and I’m already trying to grab books on PaperBack Swap for it. Saves on buying them new!

Tristan: I was able to get three of our books from the Paperback Swap this year too. I love being able to do that! I don’t have any more to list though, so I am going to run out of credits very soon.
Hi Dawn,
We are doing Ancients this year and using Mystery of History. I really can’t wait until we get to Knights and Castles as I have a 7 year old who is going to go crazy.
I really wish we had a bookshop like that near here.
Blessings
Honey
Thanks for stopping by my blog and leaving me a comment! What I wouldn’t give for a homeschool store here!
