I don’t homeschool because…
… I want to spend every waking minute with my kids
… I have a huge abundance of patience
… I think my homeschool is better than your kid’s public school
… I have a teaching certificate
… I want my kids to watch TV all day
… I want to isolate my kids from “the real world”
… I want to control everything they do
… I am anti-government
… I think denim jumpers are the height of fashion
… I think my kids are better than yours
We homeschool because it has become a lifestyle of learning, and we love it.
Why (don’t) you homeschool?

Found you via twitter. I am @bandawerner.
I found this post hilarious. Thank you for the laughs this A.M.
Ah! Welcome! I follow you on Twitter!
Ridiculous what people actually have the nerve to ask sometimes!
I wrote about this on my Our Homeschool page!
“We do not home school to keep them ignorant of current events, politics, and whatever else is out there. We do not home school to overprotect our children. We do not home school for purposes of religious “indoctrination”. We do not dress our children in denim jumpers nor would I be caught dead in one.”
Came by from the Hip Homeschool Hop to say hi!
I love it! People assume things and we always get asked the same questions– it’s really odd how closed minded people are at times. This list is a response to actual questions we’ve been asked. Thanks for coming by!
Lizzie: I read your blog pretty regularly, and love today’s post… but there is no way to leave you a comment there, which I would if I could!
We didn’t start with WTM but I did read it and learned so much about education from that book! We are very eclectic but I do believe in chronological history, and use some of what I learned from WTM.
With special needs we have to be a lot more flexible than the WTM suggests, and can only handle 1/4 as much writing!
Nice to meet you, love your above post! found you on the Homeschool Hop. Can’t wait to read more of your posts – signed up to follow you. I invite you to come visit my homeschool blog & follow back! Enjoy the rest of your week!

Love it!! Contrary to popular belief…I don’t homeschool just so my family can tell me how weird we are. I love the name of your blog. My kids would LOVE to add the “and a dog” to our life.

Awesome post! I love how you address all of the stereotypes of homeschoolers! Following from Hip Homeschool Hop!
Kelly: Thanks for the visit! It’s sad but honestly these are all based on things that I have been ASKED, usually while my kids and I are out “in the real world” during school hours.
Denim Jumpers!……ROFL!! Love it! That isn’t why I homeschool either!

Haha! Loved it. So funny that you wrote about this. My post was about homeschooling too. You’ll have to check it out. I’m number 31. My biggest pet peeve about other people and homeschooling is how, almost, offended they get at the idea that I might homeschool. And how they assume I think they are bad parents for choosing not to. And the denim jumper thing had me chuckling. Such stereotypes, huh?
God bless!
Melissa: Oh YES the stereotypes are hilarious! And frustrating! and you’re right, so many people are offended as if we look down on THEM or something. Weird.
I’m visiting from the Hip Homeschool Hop. LOL about the denim jumpers! I would look so stupid in one of those!

Sadly, I do know some homeschool moms who DO wear them… and NO ONE looks nice in them. Thankyou, but no. Not me.
Great reasons…or not!
Thanks for linking up today!

Oh Amanda: Thanks for the visit! I just found your Top Ten Tuesday and I think I will join in often. Fun!
Thanks for sharing that post. Would love to homeschool, if only I wasn’t too busy teaching 30 first graders of someone elses!!!
Janis: I know many teachers who quit to homeschool their own kids, and I also know many who wish they could. You’re not alone. And maybe, just maybe, you could swing it. It just takes some re-organizing.
My cousin posted this on his facebook. I began homeschooling in 1984. I have graduated 4 children and have started over with my adopted daughter. I’ve heard it all. My oldest daughter is homeschooling her 6 children with 2 dogs and 2 cats. The frog died. Keep up the good work.
I love this list, Dawn! Fun stuff!
Thanks for sharing it.
I have shared your blog with many homeschool mom’s
over the past several months.
Keep up the great work!

Aww thanks Rena!!
Oh, this is sooo close to the post I wast trying to write yesterday! Yours is way better. I gave up and wrote something else instead.
I get so frustrated when others ASSUME I think less or differently of them for sending their kids to public school, so they pick a fight. (I especially get frustrated when I get roped into defending myself before I realize it. Ug!)
Also, no jumpers for me! I’m a capri pants girl.

Oh come ON Amber, you know that jumpers are the HEIGHT of fashion!
LOL I either wear capris, shorts (right now, 96 degrees) or flowy skirts, which are MUCH cooler than shorts are, actually. No denim jumpers here.
Hi Dawn,
Stopped by to give you some SEO and comment luv! Great post about the real reasons many of us homeschool.

Great list! We (don’t) homeschool for many of the same reasons.

Well Dawn… this is great! And I really don’t homeschool! It’s just not me however I do respect all of you who do and wish I could be just like you homeschooling ladies!
I just had to comment because seriously, I don’t have it in me but I wish I did. I have reasons I send my children to public school. I love how you hit on stereotypes because I’ve heard people say those things before about homeschooling. Honestly, for me, it doesn’t matter because it’s whatever God leads your family to. And I totally respect that!

And THAT is how I would expect a sister in Christ to respond. We have done public, homeschool, and public/home partnership and I say whatever works for your family best is what you should do. Thank you for the kind comments.
I so started homeschooling so I could wear a denim jumper-but I haven’t wore one yet cause not a store int eh mall carries them in my size
LOL Thanks for the laugh!
LOL… wait… really? And the mall CARRIES them? The only place I’ve seen them in the past five years are thrift stores. Sorry you were deprived but hopefully homeschooling is a LOT better than denim jumpers!
