KinderGardens Week 16: Boy is it HOT Out

Inadvertent FarmerThe weather has been just plain HOT.  I lost my camera, so I wasn’t able to post pictures the last two weeks, but my son “found it” yesterday.  I think I will probably lose my dial-up friends here, because I am posting a LOT of pictures today!

Our plants have been suffering from the heat. And weeds.  As I said last week, I lose interest at this point in the summer. When it’s hot OUT, I stay IN. This morning I ventured out to the garden while it was still cool, to snap a few shots. I checked the carrots and garlic last night, and neither are ready to pick yet, no matter how impressive their above-ground growth appears. Sad, because I was excited about those! Not yet, not yet. I also think they need more water than they have been getting.

The peas are growing and producing pretty well. One grew up & over the top of the cage and now all the vines are bent but are still growing and green, so I think they’ll be okay. And see my Shasta Daisy? It’s HUGE!

Boy do we have raspberries!  We actually got a 2 cup container’s worth a couple days in a row. Which reminds me, we need to pick again today. Hate to see THOSE go bad on the plants!

Our tomatoes are doing okay. I think the heat is taking away some of their water. We run the sprinkler system in the garden every morning but they still show some signs of dehydration (smaller, odd shaped leaves). We are now supplementing in the evening too. Not all the plants are caged, but they are ALL very bushy!

I haven’t shown you much of our squash and canteloupe, but they are growing…okay. It looks like something is eating the leaves though.

Something mysterious is happening to our little apple tree. The cherry tree died at the beginning of spring, and now I fear the same for our apple tree. And it actually has apples on it this year! :(

And as always, those puppies are at it again. No, not killing birds (this time) but they ARE driving me batty!  They have perfected several ways to escape the yard. I caught Levi on his way back IN this morning.

  • We have only been in the upper 70′s here…my tomatoes and such are never going to ripen at this rate. We need a little of your heat and I’ll send some clouds your way, ok?

    Sorry about your apple tree…Kim

    Hi Dawn,
I get burnt out around this time of year too, only we had such a late start to Spring that I really can’t afford to be. We’re just beginners. We’ve learned to go with one variety of lettuce until we get the hang of it (can’t tell some of the varieties from the weeds).0I’m not sure that our tomatoes are going to make it :( , but we may get a few peppers and the potatoes are looking good so far. Any tips for adding life back to my tomatoes?

    • Your spring sounds like ours. We were still having freezing nights and snow flurries in April this year! You might try some Miracle Grow for the tomatoes. Fertilizer definitely helps perk them up!

  • It’s been really HOT here too and things are starting to burn up. I have an apple tree too and know NOTHING about it. The apples look ready but have a bitter taste… ???? Ohwell. Maybe next year, right?

    • Are you sure they’re not crab apples? If they are smaller, either green or green/red they may be, and those babies are SOUR. Not good for eating, or anything else for that matter. I do know that if you don’t spray your apple trees twice (once while blooming and again while growing) you will get wormy apples. Same with cherries.

  • Well that sounds bad about your fruit trees. I hope that the apple comes out of it. I read the comment above about needing to spray the fruit trees twice a year. I’ve never heard that and we get good apples and cherries without ever spraying. Maybe it’s because they are older trees or the fact we live in a different zone.
