Housebreaking Playful, Poopy Puppies

PICT0001 (2) Cleo’s puppies are growing up. They’re five months old now, and spent the day at the vet’s office, coming home minus the ability to have puppies themselves.  They are learning to mind (a little), and can now walk on a leash. I can’t say they love walking yet, but once we get started down the block they sure turn into happy pups. :)

I wish I could say that they are growing and learning in every area, but they’re not.  These puppies are killing our carpet. We had begun to let them sleep with us—for about a week.  In that week they peed on our bed twice and Missy pooped on my pillow once!  Back to the kennel at night for them! Grrr.

PICT0003 (2)It’s not like we don’t take them outside. If it’s not overly hot or cold (or if the mosquitoes aren’t swarming), we frequently just leave the back slider door open about 7”, which is just enough room for them to come and go as they please.  The trouble is, they can spend half an hour outside playing, come back in, and pee three feet inside the door. Or sneak upstairs and poop in the hallway.  Or name your area/space/room and I guarantee you they’ve done both there as well.

I’ve shampooed the carpet monthly for several months now. Today I noticed that it’s been a month since I cleaned the carpets, and they need it AGAIN. I’m sick of this.  I can take them outside every half an hour and it doesn’t make a difference. They still go inside.  Yes, they DO go when they’re out, but they don’t have any qualms about relieving themselves in the house, either.

We’ve taken them out on a schedule, used a potty pad, punished, rewarded and praised, and nothing is helping.

Short of a cork and shock collar stripping the carpets and laying down vinyl that looks like oak flooring, what the heck should we do?? HELP!

  • We’ve faced this a couple of times, had a Pom dog before. It came down to extreme training. Strict times of water and food. Timing the 15 minutes after eating to go out side. Keeping the back door closed – with a bell hung from it on a string to know when they go there. Always on a leash in the house. Potty pads by the door in their favorite spot – and doggie diapers from Pet Co when they were off leash.

It did help. Our pom seemed to get mad at us if we for a second did not give him King of the Castle attention. We ended up giving him to a disabled girl in a wheel chair that wanted a dog on a leash or her lap 24/7. We didn’t have that kind of attention to give a pampered pooch. :) We now have a border collie. :)

Things that did work for the dog when he was getting the attention as the doggie bell, when he wanted to go outside – to walk with him until he “goes” and then bring him back inside for praise and a treat. :) He’d thrive on the praise and pee just to get it. :)

    Good Luck!

I don’t know about pom puppies, but I was able to train my boxer pup to go on command. A few minutes after she ate, slept or played, I took her outside where I wanted her to go and followed her around quietly saying, “Go potty.” repeatedly until she did then praised her lavishly. She’s four years old now and will go within 30 seconds of my giving her the command now. I also watched her like a hawk inside and would scold her the minute she began making a mess in the house.

From the sounds of it, you may have a tougher case on your hands. *sigh*

    Good luck!

  • Wow. We currently have two black lab/border collie puppies. They are 3 months old now. We haven’t had as much trouble with potty training as you have. I do know that having them crate trained helps. With our last puppy, a lab/rottweiler mix, we used the leash in the house, but it’s exhausting. I can’t imagine doing it with two unless you had nothing else to do. With these ones, I take 4 small treats when we go outside. As soon as they finish going, we praise and give them a treat. The immediate reinforcement has worked really well with them.
