When I first began homeschooling, I had so many things set in my head. I knew how we would do our schoolwork, where we would be, what I would hang on the walls, and how well it would all work. Boy was I deluded!
After 12 years of homeschooling, one thing for sure that I know, is that I didn’t know ANYTHING when we started. Even now, I still don’t know it all. For me, homeschooling does NOT look like a school classroom. There are no desks lined up in a row. In fact, there are no desks. There are no posters on the walls. There are no bells, no set times for certain subjects (except lessons outside the house, where I pay for them) and no absolutely perfect days. You can take a look at a (sort of) typical day for us.
Our homeschool room is in the kitchen. The dining room table is large enough for the boys to dump out ALL of their school books, and have work space, and space for me at the end of the table. Not that I encourage them to dump out all of their books… but I’ll give you a guess as to how I know it fits.
We do book work, or more appropriately seat work, at the table. Handwriting, spelling, grammar, math…these things usually get done at the table. I say usually, +because D1 prefers to do math on the living room floor, but can’t always stay on task when he does that so it depends on what kind of a day he’s having. I don’t park the kids with their books, because they don’t stay on task reliably yet, and besides that I’m needed for guidance or help much of the time.
On the flip side, our couch gets a lot of school time too. We read everything in the living room. We practice Scripture memorization in the living room (on a mini trampoline!). At all times, we are pestered by puppies. They think that if we’re on the couch or in the living room, we must be there for their entertainment.
I would love to have a homeschool room, but I know I never will. I would love to hang up posters, but my husband doesn’t want our house to look like a school. I do have an out of sight solution: velcro under the edge of the upper cabinets. I just put velcro on the cabinet and velcro on whatever I want to hang, and voila’, instant (temporary) posters & maps. Even E thought that was a decent solution.
We don’t homeschool as if we have a school. We do school here, there, and everywhere. We are relaxed within our needed structure, and it works for us. That is all that matters!

Hello! I’m participating in iFellowship. Enjoy this day the Lord has made and may you be glad in it!

Welcome! Have a wonderful day!
Loved all these “tips” on “where” to homeschool!
As being a new mom to Homeschooling, (my daughter is only 3, but this is something we are going to start doing full swing next year), I loved hearing how you just used your house as your school and kept it casual!
Stopping by from ifellowship!
Have a blessed day!

Amy: You’ll definitely find as many METHODS of homeschooling as you will homeschoolERs. Take ideas that sound good and work for you, and don’t feel bad about not doing things the way others do them. Homeschoolers, especially new ones, tend to compare themselves to everyone else and I know for me, when I do that I always feel like I’m doing something wrong or missing something. But we’re not! Enjoy your daughter!
Happy iFellowship! Hope you have a great day!

Nice to meet you!
We also homeschool at our dining room table. I do have a couple of dry erase boards hanging up. I am also going to hang maps and a time line up this year. Even though we have been homeschooling for 7 years (starting our 8th next month), I am still learning new things to do. We love it! by the way, I am a follower now!

I love your blog and I’m so glad that I found it. I love meeting new (to me) bloggers! iFellowship is great!
We do have a “schoolroom” which is the dining room (we don’t use it though). We also end up on the floor, on the couch, in the kitchen, etc. Some day our room will be redone, but for now, I put up all kinds of stuff. ~smile~

Our dining room is more like a dining AREA… just off the kitchen and it’s the only sitting space we have. It’s also the first thing people see when they walk into the house, so no “schoolroom” stuff allowed. My boys keep their books in backpacks in there, but they are out of the way and usually out of sight when we’re not doing school.
Here too. I used to think I wanted a school room, but over the years I’ve come to realize that would be way too isolated! At any given moment, my 12 year old might be reading in her room or working on something at the kitchen table, my 9 year old might be on the computer, reading on the couch, or doing an experiment in the kitchen, and my younger two could be anywhere!!

YES it is HOMEschooling because it should feel like home. We school all over our home too.
