It’s happening again! Amy at Mom’s Toolbox is hosting another Bible in 90 Days challenge, beginning July 5 and ending on October 2, 2010. Amy asked those of us who completed the last challenge (Jan-March) to write about why we had decided to join in.
For me, I didn’t have a huge desire to do it. Originally when I first heard about it, I complained to OTHERS on Twitter that reading the Bible like that was way too fast. And I said it to quite a few people. And of course all of my followers saw it. About a month later, I got to eat a little crow as I began the challenge myself.
I decided that even though it seemed to be a really fast pace, it would be a way to actually accomplish reading the entire Bible. How many people can actually say that? I’m a bit of a history buff too. I love to see how all of the pieces fit together. What better way to understand the Bible in it’s context than to read the whole thing, as I have so many times read novels, unable to put them down even for a minute? It just made so much sense to read it like that.
In the beginning, it was easy. The reading was interesting, and events happened at a good pace. A bit further in, when we hit the Books of the Law, I was trudging. Leviticus was NOT fun. NOT easy. NOT what I wanted to do. But God is good, and it was around Leviticus that I began to lean heavily on the Lord to get me through it. I had some context then, and came through the Law with this amazing understanding—and thankfulness—for my salvation!
Did I always keep up? No. I was 2 days behind off and on for probably half of the time. Weekends are bad for me because I often work Sat/Sun evenings… meaning that if I don’t get up early and get all the reading for the day done, there is no catch-up time later. I would read sometimes at work on my iPod, but my job doesn’t really allow me much time. Still, even with being a couple days behind, I was able to catch up each week and get right back on schedule. If I can do it, you can do it too!
And a word about the 90-Day Bible itself. I don’t own one. I did consider buying one, but then I thought, why? I have my own Bible. And NOW? I have my own Bible with tons of highlights, underlines, and notes written in the margins. I have a treasure, in my own Bible, knowing that I have read every single page. I also marked the end of each day’s reading so that when I want to do it again, the stopping points are already there.
Would I do it again? Definitely. I plan to, not this time around but next January I will, and this time I plan to involve my kids. We will take turns reading out loud in the mornings. I loved this experience. It was so absolutely worth it!

Thanks for this post! Good to hear how it went, and why it would be worthwhile to participate. I’ll for sure be praying about it…

Okay, you’ve encouraged me…I will give it a go. I was shamed by my husband a “new Christian” raised Jewish who has read the entire bible—TWICE. I’ve never read it all.

Hooray! That’s exactly what I was hoping for. You will NOT regret it! I wish I had the time to devote to going through it again in July but I just don’t. Definitely in January again though! Be sure to join Twitter if you haven’t already, and start following the #b90days hashtag, because they have tweet chats every Monday night once b90days gets rolling again! I’ll pop in from time to time too.
90 Days? That’s inspiring! I take a year to do it!
I just found you. I have four sons, so come on over and see me sometime!
Laura: Welcome! I definitely recommend giving the Bible in 90 Days challenge a go. It is SO worth it! I will pop over and say hello on your blog. Thanks for the visit!
I am so in! I skipped last time because I knew with other previous bible study commitments that I would not be whole heartedly devoted to seeing it through… but we have finished everything and are taking a break. I’ve also never read it at all… I guess I’ve found it a bit intimidating… but we can do it together right?? I’ve got a new blog at acordofthreestrands.net so I’ll be blogging about my progress there. I found this link on twitter… so thank you!!
