What have I been up to? I know I have had posts going up nearly every day, but I have actually been almost ignoring my blog for the past week. This is why. This is an empty room with white walls and freshly shampooed carpet. Since our 18yo daughter decided she wanted to move in with Gramma & Grampa, I decided to do something about her horrendous bedroom. We took the posters down, took all of her stuff OUT, and painted and cleaned carpets.
This is where the stuff from her bedroom currently IS. In the middle of our very small basement family room. And see that “pumpkin” orange cabinet? It is one of a set of 8, which I am currently in the process of painting. Both girls’ rooms need painting, and both girls have these orange cabinets. When put together, they make a rather impressive wall unit, which used to reside in my Gramma’s family room. Ever since I can remember, they were there. They were yellow when I was very young, and when I was a young teen, she had my uncle paint them PUMPKIN. Just lovely. (Please read my sarcasm here, they are hideous!) My girls have had them in their rooms for a several years, and since we’re redecorating, these are getting redecorated too! In fact, ALL of their furniture is getting a face lift.
Even a coat of primer gray makes a world of difference!! But just look at these drawers, which are the only things that are finished, at this point. A couple coats of black paint, and new brushed nickel knobs, and WOW! I am amazed at the difference. It looks like we bought new furniture! And those knobs were $16 for a 10-pack at Target! Can’t beat that!!
And I had to show you the carpet too, because it hasn’t been this clean since it was new! (Note to self: Don’t ever cover a kid’s room with Cookie Dough colored carpeting.)
One thing that really took me by surprise, other than the great end result, was that it takes a LOT more spray paint than I first thought that it would. Two coats of primer gray, then two coats of satin black worked out to almost two cans of each PER CABINET. I have 7 empty cans sitting on the kitchen counter and I probably need another 15 of each color to get all of the cabinets done!! It will be cheaper to just buy a gallon of paint and do them by hand. That’s a hard lesson learned!

Love painting – especially when you have looked at an ugly piece for years! Can’t wait to see the finished product!

Wow! You are doing an amazing job on everything. I can’t even imagine how much work that all is. Well, I guess I can imagine and I am glad it is you doing it and not me! I love how the drawers look. It is amazing what a coat of paint can do.
