Today is Day 9 in the reading plan, and so far it has been an interesting venture! I knew about the Law, the Covenant, and that Jesus was the final sacrificial Lamb to atone for all of our sins. Praise God! I say that not only for myself, but after reading through Exodus and Leviticus (through 26:26 today) I just can’t even fathom how they did it. There was just no possible way they could keep every single law! Some odd things that struck me:
- If a person had a sore or skin condition, once they were pronounced ‘clean’ by the priest they had to bring two animals for offering: one was a sin offering and the other a burnt offering. The condition of being ‘unclean’ was akin to sin. This strikes me as so strange, considering all of the possible things that could cause a skin condition or a weeping sore (such as acne or a blister from a burn).
- Many of the conditions that are called unclean were things people don’t even now speak about publicly very often (television notwithstanding). The person would have to go to the priest and tell him.
- Women were considered unclean for 7 days, even if their monthly period lasted for 3 or 4.
Aaron’s sons disobeyed God right off the bat. That surprised me, how quickly they went their own way. His next two sons were quickly installed as replacements, and God demonstrated immediately that obedience was mandatory. Even now, how often do we try to slide by just going halfway, doing “mostly” what God wants but adding in something of our own? God is sovereign, and we can’t forget that.
I slipped behind in my reading on Day 6, only getting through half of the day’s reading. I caught up by listening to the audio of it, then it happened again on Day 7. Day 8 saw me all caught up, and Day 9 I did my day’s reading in one sitting. This has been VERY interesting, and rewarding too. I never thought I would want to tackle this, but now that I’ve begun it I really want to finish!

GREAT point! I often find myself doing mostly what God wants….but that doesn’t cut it. I was struck how you were considered to have sinned and been unclean by touching something unclean, even if you didn’t know you did it. But I was fascinated by (IMO) the grace that was provided when God pointed out that in some cases they are not guilty until they become aware of their uncleanliness.

I found Leviticus to be a bit of a challenge too. But after reading through to Chapter 26 I really am glad I stuck with it. I learned a lot of things. Those rules were so specific!
