Once again it’s time for the Weekly Wrap-Up over at Weird Unsocialized Homeschoolers!
This week, I learned that we’re really getting to know ourselves. How do my boys learn? What makes them tick? And WHY is it SO hard to get started at 9am?? They are all questions that, while I don’t exactly have ANSWERS for them, I’m realizing that maybe the answers aren’t all that important. What I am learning is that the process of learning is important. It’s the GETTING TO KNOW my kids, being flexible and going with the flow… this is homeschooling. Who cares if we don’t start school until 10:00 or 10:30 in the morning? I mean, really, who cares? They do their work, and we manage to get quite a bit accomplished each week.
This week, we:
- Got all of our daily bookwork done.
- Did most of our additional reading.
- Worked on our Egypt/OT lapbook 4/5 days!
- Memorized the 10 Commandments.
- Passed math tests with 90% (both boys!!) D2 figured out rounding to nearest 10′s and D1 has his x2′s memorized!
- Kicked boo-tay on spelling lessons!
- Prayed together every day.
- Had some really awesome discussion about God’s provision, as we are studying the Exodus and Moses.
- Went 4-wheeling with Daddy twice.
- Helped Daddy work in the woodshop.
- Took down all the pleated shades in the dining room and living room (7 to be exact) and took them in for cleaning/repairs.
- Installed our new, fancy dancy fiber optic super high-speed DSL modem (7Mbps!!! I’m LOVIN it!)
- Raked leaves and jumped in them.
- Started swimming lessons, which the boys LOVE and will continue to do twice a week, probably until the end of the school year.
- Momma is working out during said swimming lessons. She really needs it.
- Daddy and Momma went to part 1 of a marriage conference being held at the church Friday night/Saturday morning. And it was good! (Eric didn’t die or anything! Considering he’d rather be peeled like a banana than go to a marriage conference, we’re both relieved that he survived. LOL!)
So while we didn’t begin school before 10am even one day this week, we DID have a productive week. We DID enjoy our time together, and I am learning, day by day, that it’s not the schedule or the books but the whole entire time, the days and minutes together, that make up an education. It’s everything put together, and there just is no wrong way to do this.

Sounds like a fantastic week.We rarely get started before 10 a.m., although my goal is always 9:30!

You did a lot! I love not having to get up so early. I was the worst of everyone. I would still be in bed around 9am while my boys were downstairs doing their homework, which was their choice! Though, this year I’ve been trying really hard to get up early everyday. Key word is trying!

I used to get school started by 8 and then the wee babe, who’s now a fussy wee tot, arrived. These days we’re just happy to start. LOL
Enjoy your new modem. It’ll certainly make blog surfing a lot easier.

I’m with you sister! We don’t get started on our “seated work” until 10 or even (gasp!) 11ish. I use to try to have them get chores done, eat bfast, then straight to table work before 9am…but…what about playing?! I have found that letting my kiddo’s get an hour in on the tire swing and/or playing with kittens BEFORE “work” is so needed. Isn’t that what HOME schooling is, I ask my self. There’s several “live your life by this schedule” books and homeschooling tools out there. But when I get into reading or trying to implement those structures it just takes all the F-U-N out of our day. I’m personally learning to do shorter lessons also. Yes, I use to make my kids do “one hour of math” and this go round I’m setting the timer for 20-30 minutes per subject and have them put it up. Let’s spend all our BIG time on great reading and lapbooks!!! Woot! Anyway, I’m rambling
But just wanted to say…you guys “did” alot and the 4 wheeling sounds best!!!
It sounds like a great week and I am SO with you about learning about what works for US. I feel like I’m always reevaluating…but that will make us successful- when we do what works for us, right? =)
