Home Therapies for Special Needs

Okay, I need some help. There is a possibility that I may be able to pull the boys back out of school, provided I can locate some special needs resources for home use. I found some things, and I need feedback. If you have experience with any of these, please PLEASE post me a comment!

BrainBuilder for building attention span, memory, and processing skills. This sounds really great to me.

The ALERT Program “How Does Your Engine Run?”: This is for self modulation and awareness of their state of mind. Our OT used this with D1 and it was fantastic, however she didn’t really give me much to use for home. I recently found out that they have home programs too. Has anyone used their home programs? This one I am seriously looking at because my son is already familiar with the program and I know it helped him.

Balametrics: I’m NOT looking at this to purchase a whole kit or anything, just the ideas that they use for therapies. Many of these things (balance boards, spinners, etc) our OT used with D1 with good success. Even his SLP used a big swing for him during particularly off-days at speech, because he could attend better while he was in motion. So do you use any of these types of equipment at home, and how does it work for you?

Also, any books you can think of! I spent the morning reading newsletters at NATHHAN.org, and I think they will probably be a good resource for me. I have to join in order to find out much more though, which I am hesitant to do until I know for sure that I’ll be able to bring D1 home.

And one last thing: Are any of you homeschooling a special needs child who obtains services at a public school? I will need to keep D1 in the Resource Room portion of the school for 2 hours per day. This isn’t something I know anything about… It is my husband’s requirement for him in order for me to homeschool though, so I will go along with it. I think I will be able to make this work, I just need more information everyone.

Please, leave me comments, I need input!!
God bless and thanks everyone~

  • Oh my goodness, do you know how many Yahoo Groups I belong to?? :) TEN! And those aren’t even state-specific! But that’s a good idea… might have to find a WA homeschoolers one…

Actually, a What Yahoo Groups Do You Belong To? Meme might be fun to try…. confession time! lol

I have zero experience with this and have nothing to add…just wanted to recommend joining a Yahoo group of homeschoolers from your state. I find SO much useful information on the Yahoo groups I’m a part of! There may even be a Yahoo group specifically for homeschooling parents of special needs children in your state. They’ll know all the in’s and out’s of what you need to know, I’m sure.

Hope it helps. And good luck!

I am looking into starting this as well with Little Man if the school doesn’t start doing things right. I am at a loss too – good luck is all I can say!
