I am glad that I am not alone on apraxia of speech. My 3 year old son has childhood apraxia of speech. Currently the only thang that he says is momma, uh oh, bubba. He will be starting speech therapy in a week. Also he went to pre-school for the last three months of schol last year and will cont. this school year so he does have an IEP. I am glad to hear that the other children have started talking once they recieved the therapy needed. B is potty trained except there are some nights that he has an accident. I was wanting to know what I could be doing at home with him to help him learn how to talk. He eats really good never had no trouble there just not talking. Thanks and God Bless
It sounds as if your son has a great start and will continue to progress really well! I am a firm believer that all children need to be read to. The best and easiest way to enhance his speech and language development, from a mom standpoint, is to read read read to him. Choose books with great wording…
A Child’s Garden of Verses by Robert Louis Stevenson, Dr. Suess books, and Shel Silverstein books are all great fun to read, because they rhyme. Kids love rhymes, so you may be able to get him to “read” along with you and learn some rhymes, while working on his articulation. This is also a lead-in to early reading skills too, so a double bonus.
Ask your speech therapist what you can be doing at home. Ours had us giving D1 peanut butter on a spoon, to lick off. He had very poor tongue strength and it helped a lot. Blow bubbles, lick off pudding, blow whistles, etc. These are all things my son did in speech therapy 3x a week also, which we did at home.
