VBS last week; now back to school

Last week was our church’s first VBS in five years. We had a children’s pastor who decided, way back then, that VBS was a waste of time because so many parents would take their kids “VBS hopping”: they would register their kids for every VBS they could find, all summer long, for childcare purposes. Okay, I can understand that viewpoint, but many of the actual church members were pretty upset about it. I, for one, always brought at least 3-4 extra neighborhood kids with us, every year. And of those, at least one or two made decision for Jesus. For me, that is NOT a waste of time.

So we have this awesome, young and fun new children’s pastor, and he loves doing VBS. Go Pastor D1! It went fantastically, although for obvious reasons, it was the smallest one I’ve ever seen our church do. We only had around 90 kids, but for a “first time” I think that was probably all we could handle anyway. It was great, lots of kids came to know Christ this last week. My boys loved it, and D1 did amazingly well, considering he was often in very large groups with music and noise.

This week, we are back to work. Well, not work exactly, but schoolwork anyway. I’ve spent some more time reading, both at AO and at An Old Fashioned Education, and have found so many more books I’d love to read with the boys than just the AO Year One list!! I think we will probably do some modifications to the reading list soon. For now, this is working out very well. I am also going to start using a very old math book called White’s First Book of Arithmetic with the boys. We’ll use our Math U See blocks and marker boards, and just see how it goes. We also have our MUS books, so I’m not abandoning them completely. I just want to give mostly oral lessons a try.

  • This was also my church’s first VBS in several years as well, last week!! Seems there were many going on at the same time on the blogs that I frequent.

This time my youngest was a helper during VBS as she is going into 7th grade in the fall.

We had a very successful week and yes several of the kids had been doing different VBS’s during the summer but if this is what it take for a child to come to know Jesus personally then what’s the problem? Glad it went well for your church and your son.

That’s so sad that your pastor had that take on VBS! Our church just had our VBS last wee too and it was wonderful. We’re all still recovering it was so wonderful! lol

I say that our kids can’t get too much of Jesus, so if the kids are hoping from one VBS to another, it should be considered more a good thing than a bad. :)

Glad you had the opportunity to get back into VBS! Very cool!
