Free Online Textbooks

I just stumbled on to THIS SITE tonight, and thought I’d share! They are public school textbook .PDFs, written with an adjusted vocabulary for middle school/high school. There are texts for:
English
Foreign Language (Spanish)
Language Arts
Mathematics
Physical Education and Health
Science
Social Studies
You can view them by clicking the subject links on the site, and download them one chapter or unit at a time. I skimmed through a couple of social studies chapters, an English chapter, a few science chapters, and every one I saw was written conversationally. They are understandable enough that even a fifth grader, I think, would be able to use them, even though they are written for middle/high school ages and subjects.

I glanced at their price list, and a whole text and teacher’s guide together are under $20, downloadable–however, since they are written for the Florida schools I’m not sure they’ll work with homeschoolers. Still, you never know. You could email them if you want to be able to download whole texts and TMs at once. Keep in mind, as public school texts they are NOT written from a Christian Worldview. I don’t know if I’ll ever use them but it’s nice to have the (FREE!) resource available, anyway. :)

  • I need to start homeschooling so these links would be helpful. Sadly, my daughter is only 2 years old.

  • Sadly?! She’s got a good three years before she even NEEDS any curriculum outside of Bible story books and the occasional trip to story time at the Library. You’ve got years to figure out how she learns and what she likes! Consider it a blessing!! Also if you Google ‘early childhood education curriculum’ or ‘preschool curriculum’ you’ll be overwhelmed with free online stuff that you can use. :) I’m going to be posting more freebies that I find.

WHAT WOULD YOU SUGGEST: My daughter’s writing is terrible and slow. She’s slowwwwly beginning to catch on, but in the meantime, she’s losing so much she needs and is going into fourth grade. HOW will I EVER catch her up wtih book reports, quotations, needing a new paragraph between quotes, essays, etc., if she’s in fifth grade before she can write? Forget about any chance of cursive; manuscript is still too much for her.
Do you know if any of these free textbook websites would work?

  • Jen: First, are you homeschooling, or is your daughter going into school for fifth grade? That makes a difference how you approach things. If she will be home, I would definitely work on her writing ABILITY before stressing writing PRODUCTION. She needs to comfortably hold and use a pencil. If this is an issue, then you may want to seek an evaluation by an occupational therapist. It sounds like she could really use some help in that department first. You can work around that by giving her instruction on paragraphs, main ideas, etc. but having her dictate to you or a tape recorder. You can even get a computer program like Dragon Naturally Speaking, which will do the typing from spoken words. That will work in the meantime, but I would definitely address the writing issue first.
